WASHINGTON, Oct. 4 Kyodo - The United States on Tuesday expressed displeasure at Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's use of offensive language against President Barack Obama.
"Those comments are at odds with the warm relationship that exists between the Filipino and the American people," White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said at a press briefing.
Earnest made the comment after Duterte expressed his disappointment with U.S. criticism of his bloody anti-illegal drugs campaign and told Obama to "go to hell!"
Speaking in Manila on Tuesday, Duterte said the Philippines might "break up with America" and forge closer ties with China and Russia.
Earnest said that despite such remarks, the United States has yet to receive any official requests from Duterte or other Philippine officials to alter the alliance, which he said "is robust and benefits both of our countries."
The spokesman said that Tuesday marked the beginning of annual joint exercises involving the two countries' militaries, in yet another example of "the strong partnership and alliance that is in place."
"So we've obviously seen the rhetoric," he said. "But we're also aware of the kind of communication that U.S. officials have had with their counterparts throughout the government in the Philippines."
Earnest said that while maintaining the alliance with Manila, Washington will continue to raise concerns about extrajudicial killings by or at the behest of government authorities in the Philippines, acts he called "entirely inconsistent with universal human rights and the shared values of our two countries."
"We value the strong alliance with the Philippines but we won't be silent in raising our significant concerns about these kinds of reports," he said. ==Kyodo
