WASHINGTON, Oct. 20 Kyodo - The United States said Thursday it will seek an explanation from the Philippines for President Rodrigo Duterte's announcement of a "separation" from Washington, Manila's security treaty ally.
Such a remark is "inexplicably at odds with the very close relationship" between the two countries, State Department spokesman John Kirby said at a press briefing.
Referring to a planned trip to the Philippines from Saturday by Daniel Russel, U.S. assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs, Kirby said, "We are going to be seeking an explanation of exactly what the president meant when he talked about separation from the U.S."
"It's not clear to us exactly what that means in all its ramifications," he said.
Speaking at a business forum Thursday in Beijing, Duterte announced his "separation" from the United States, both militarily and economically, as he sought to build closer ties with China, Washington's strategic rival in the Asia-Pacific region.
Duterte, who came to power in June, has been distancing the Philippines from the United States due to U.S. criticism of his bloody anti-drug campaign.
Manila and Beijing were to sign $13.5 billion worth of business agreements during Duterte's four-day visit to China through Friday. After the trip to China, the Philippines leader will pay a three-day visit to Japan starting Tuesday.
Kirby said Thursday that the United States is not the only country that is "baffled" by Duterte's rhetoric.
"We have heard from many of our friends and partners in the region who are likewise confused about where this is going, and also, we believe, are trying to learn more on their own about what it portends," he said.
Despite Duterte's perceived pivot from Washington to Beijing, a Filipino poll released Tuesday shows that three-quarters of the Filipinos trust the United States and many of them distrust China.
According to the poll conducted by Social Weather Stations on Sept. 24-27 among 1,200 adults nationwide, 76 percent of them had "much trust" in the United States, while only 22 percent felt the same way about China. ==Kyodo
